4/03/2010: Brough Scott launches Orbit East's community suite

Orbit East’s new Community Suite at Brough Scott House in Newmarket has been officially opened by its namesake – racing personality Brough Scott.

Around 50 people, including the Mayor of Newmarket and the Chief Constable of Suffolk Police, turned out to see one of the best known figures in racing and sport cutting the ribbon at the grand opening ceremony.

A first of its kind for the Eastern region, the facility provides a much- needed hub and a valuable resource for the community of Newmarket, where there has previously been no provision for a local drop-in centre.

The Community Suite features an IT training suite, plus soft and formal meeting rooms, and will facilitate a programme of learning opportunities and community projects - giving local residents a central venue to receive a wide range of services including:

  • Adult training including computer skills, CV and letter writing
  • Access to Tenancy Support Workers
  • Internet access
  • Access to other support and voluntary agencies
  • Coffee mornings and a befriending service for new residents
  • Housing surgeries and Benefit advice

Orbit East Neighbourhood Manager, Shelley Power, said "We have received huge support for this innovative project and would like to thank

CLC, Haymills, Paintright, Heron Build, RG Maintenance and the local Police Community Support Team - who will use the facility as a base for surgeries and appointments – for their contribution. We hope our residents and the wider community of Newmarket will find the suite a useful and worthwhile resource."

Brough Scott added, "Having turned the first sod of earth when Brough Scott House was built some 21 years ago, it is an honour to be invited back again to launch such a great community facility."
